Beta Lactamase Test is a rapid test in strip for detecting the enzyme beta-lactamase which confers resistance to penicillins and cephalosporins in a wide variety of both Gram positive and Gram-negative microorganisms.

Staphylococci are the gram-positive bacteria that most commonly produce beta-lactamase; approximately 90% or more of clinical isolates are resistant to penicillin because of enzyme production. Gram-negative bacteria, including Enterobacteriaceae, P. aeruginosa, and Acinetobacter spp., produce dozens of different ?-lactamase types that mediate resistance to one or more of the ?-lactam antibiotics.

A positive Beta Lactamase test reaction is shown by the development of a pink/red colour. No colour change is observed with organisms that do not produce beta-lactamases.
