Legionella BCYE Agar

Medium for detection and enumeration of Legionella spp, according to ISO 11731.

Legionella is a ubiquitous bacterium that lives in freshwater environments and colonizes human-made water systems. Legionella pneumophila is the most virulent species, that can cause severe pneumonia and risk factors for Legionnaires’ disease include increasing age, smoking, chronic diseases, and immunodeficiency.

Legionella BCYE (Buffered Charcoal Yeast Extract) Agar is a non selective isolation medium used for the cultivation of Legionella spp. from clinical specimens and environmental samples. This composition of Legionella BCYE Agar complies with ISO 11731.

Legionella colonies are white-grey in general but can also appear in other colors. They are smooth with an entire edge and exhibit a characteristic ground-glass appearance. Under the UV light the colonies are usually brilliant with white fluorescence.
